June Lake Loop has a fantastic Brown Trout fishery

June Lake is located in the heart of the High Sierra and the center of some of the best fishing for Rainbow trout, Cutthroat trout and large Brown Trout. Some of our favorite fishing waters are 50 minutes north to the East Walker River and West Walker River, or 35 minutes south to the Upper Owens. Each of these waters are open to year-round fishing. Of course most of the lakes along June Lake Loop offer incredible brown trout fishing too. You’ll enjoy fishing here in our spectacular High Sierra Nevada mountain settings, and we hope you enjoy these next two articles specifically about the Brown Trout fishery around June Lake, California.

Articles:

We have a golden opportunity to start somewhere, and Rush Creek is that hidden gem in the High Sierra, with a growing reputation for monster brown trout. Let’s protect the spawning fish for the future, and defend the natural population of trout we have now. An article written by Don Morton.

A technical white paper with most everything you want to know about the Brown Trout fishery around June Lake Loop, and the Rush Creek Watershed. Authored by Ross N. Taylor who is the Lead Fisheries Scientist at the State Water Resources Control Board, Mono Basin Monitoring Program. Mr. Taylor is also a Fisheries Consultant with Ross Taylor and Associates.

Sustainable Fishing Practices.

As overall fish stocking programs decrease substantially, it becomes even more important that individual fisherman participate in protecting the existing and naturally spawning Brown Trout populations where they occur. Stocked brown trout will continue to increase in cost while at the same time, less government money is available to buy stocked fish. All fishermen should become aware of and participate in these sustainable fishing practices:

1. The reduction in stocked fish will put increasing pressure on existing wild, diploid trout that spawn. The behavior of the existing spawning fish has been modified by the impact of man. This modified behavior has allowed them to adapt and breed in their localized environment for generations. Traits that should be sustained and protected by those that love to fish.

2. Catch and release fishing practices for brown trout are now more important than at any time in the past. Fishing the Eastern Sierra is about more than catching your limit in the shortest time possible. It also involves being aware of and protecting our limited valuable resource, wild naturally spawning trout and their streams.

3. Fishing the Eastern Sierra is about being in the Eastern Sierra, the scenery, the clean air, the solitude, and appreciating our natural environment.
Protect and enhance spawning streams and redds. Do not walk in redds. Do not swim in streams where spawning occurs.

4. Keep your dogs out of spawning streams. Kill fewer fish, and do not kill spawning fish. It’s the responsible, personal decision. It’s up to YOU!
